TEEN CRAFT PROGRAM
Liliha Public Library (Oahu)
Wednesday, August 25, 3:00 p.m.
Interested young adults in grades 6-12 will learn how to create
magnetic bookmarks using recycled magnets that slip over both
sides of a page. This program is sponsored by the Friends of
Liliha Public Library and will be held in the library’s meeting

UPCYCLING: REIMAGINING WASTE
Waipahu Public Library (Oahu)
Wednesday, August 25, 5:00 p.m.
Craft expert Evelyn Nakamura will share her extraordinary
collection of recycled craft ideas and demonstrate how to make a
T-shirt looper rug. There will be a display of items made from
old jeans; T-shirts; pictures from magazines, calendars and
gift-wrapping paper; and shipping crates. The City & County of
Honolulu, Department of Environmental Services is sponsoring
this two-hour program as well as the "3Rs: Reduce-Reuse-Recycle"
display which are suitable for ages 12 and older. For more

6TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

August 25-28, 2010
Kapolei
Public Library marks its 6th Anniversary with programming and
special events for all ages.
Wanda Adams will kick off the anniversary celebration with a
talk entitled “What I learned from writing The Island Plate.”
This program is scheduled for Wednesday, August 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Teens can “bead” creative as they design and create their own
unique beaded bookmarks at the library in the Young Adult area.
Crafting is for “teens only” and will be available on Thursday
and Friday, August 26-27, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and on Saturday,
August 28, from 10:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
Balloon Monsoon will be at the library on Saturday, August 28,
at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s area. This one-hour program will
offer some twisted fun as they turn balloons into all sorts of
wild and crazy creations for the keiki.

“3Rs: REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE” EDUCATIONAL DISPLAY
Waipahu Public Library (Oahu)
Now through August 31, 2010
This award-winning City and County of Honolulu educational
recycling display received an Ilima Award of Excellence from the
International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) in
June 2010. A portion of the interactive display will include
3-minute videos featuring a cast of hip and opala-savvy young
actors who take viewers behind-the-scenes through the world of
Oahu's recycling and waste management systems. Visit the display
and watch episodes of "Opalavison," then have a photo taken
alongside the life-sized cutouts of the actors. Recycling has
become more and more prominent in our lives today. Taking care
of opala (the Hawaiian word for garbage) is everyone's business.

REMEMBERING
THE PAST: TALES OF A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR
Kihei Public Library (Maui)
Friday, September 3, 3:30 p.m.
Cornelis "Cor" Feenstra, a Dutch native who became an American
citizen, is a World War II Holocaust concentration camp
survivor. Feenstra, 87, is now a Kihei resident and will share
stories and photos of his Holocaust experience. Feenstra was a
22-year-old Dutch citizen in June 1944 when Allied Forces landed
at Normandy. He was arrested by a Dutch Gestapo agent and taken
to a concentration camp in Holland. Over the course of the next
10 months, Feenstra was moved to five different concentration
camps before he was liberated by General James Gavin and the
82nd Airborne Division. This one-hour program is suitable for
ages 12 and older. |
MEET AUTHOR MARGARET DILLOWAY
Hawaii Kai Public Library (Oahu)
Saturday, September 11, 11:00 a.m.
Margaret Dilloway will discuss her recently published novel,
“How to Be an American Housewife", her writing process, and her
experience publishing the novel. In her debut novel, Ms. Dilloway crosses continents, cultures, decades, and generations
to tell the story of a Japanese woman who marries an American
soldier at the end of World War II, her thorny relationship with
her American daughter, and the trip to contemporary Japan that
changes both of their lives in dramatic and unexpected ways.
“How to Be an American Housewife” had its origins in the story
of Ms. Dilloway’s own mother, also a Japanese war bride, who
died when the author was just twenty, leaving behind few details
of the family, culture, and experiences that had shaped her.
Originally from San Diego, Ms. Dilloway now lives in Hawaii Kai
with her three children and husband. She is at work on her
second novel. This one-hour program is suitable for adults. For

MEET AUTHOR JOE TSUJIMOTO
Hawaii Kai Public Library (Oahu)
Saturday, September 18, 11:00 a.m.
Joe Tsujimoto will read from his short story collection,
“Morningside Heights: New York Stories.” The stories follow the
journey of Japanese American Kenji, from being kicked out of
school in 1960s New York to teaching in Hawaii. Mr. Tsujimoto
won the 2008 Elliot Cades Award for Literature and is a finalist
for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing (2010).
He is the author of “Teaching Poetry Writing to Adolescents” and
“Lighting Fires: How the Passionate Teacher Engages Adolescent
Writers”. Mr. Tsujimoto is an English teacher at Punahou School.
This one-hour program is suitable for adults. For more

SAT 101 TEST STRATEGIES

This two-hour informational seminar will be conducted by a
national education company and is designed for prospective
college applicants who are interested in increasing their scores
on the SAT exam. Parents of students are invited to attend, as
well. The seminar will present an overview of the format and
content of the SAT, and discuss important test-taking and

PHOTO SOLUTIONS FOR BUSY PEOPLE

Do you wish you could take better pictures? Do you have tons of
pictures lost in boxes or on your computer? Do you want to put
your pictures to better use? If so, attend this one-hour
informational workshop geared specifically for people who have a
lot of pictures but not a lot of time. Ruth Pukahi will show
participants how to take better pictures and share tips on how
to effectively organize and display them. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own cameras to try out the new tips!
