CELEBRATE TEEN READ WEEK 2008!
A national annual literacy initiative created for teens, their parents,
librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults by the American
Library Association – will be celebrated at Hawaii’s public libraries throughout
the month of October. Come join us as our libraries will host special free
programs centered on this year’s theme – “Books with Bite @ your library” which
promotes a variety of books – from stories ranging from the supernatural to
“Macbeth” to “Shark Bytes” – as a tool for getting young adults to read.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, the UH-Manoa Outreach
College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program, and Hawaii Council for the
Humanities, these free programs are recommended for ages 12 and older.
MACBETH, LIVE AND IN CONTEXT!
Actors from the upcoming Kennedy Theatre production perform scenes from William
Shakespeare’s play about ambition and evil. Dr. Valerie Wayne of the University
of Hawaii at Manoa’s Department of English will moderate a discussion between
the actors and audience and provide information on Shakespeare’s witches,
murders, and gender-benders. This one-hour literary program is suitable for ages
12 and up.

Monkey Waterfall presents “Bones,” a darkly humorous exploration in dance,
music, and story inspired by the mystique of ancient human bones. This 45-minute
program is suitable for ages 12 and up.

SHARK BYTES
Think you know sharks? They have been around for 400-million years and are the
ocean’s top predators, but that’s just the beginning. Get to know these
mysterious and fascinating animals-—from the feared tiger and great white, to
the strange-looking cookiecutter and megamouth. Find out what scientists are
doing to understand them. Shark Bytes is a special presentation by shark expert
Gerald Crow and writer/photographer Jennifer Crites, authors of Sharks and Rays
of Hawai‘i.
About the Speakers:
Gerald Crow is an acclaimed scientific researcher, marine biologist and author.
He has published more than 25 research papers, is a featured speaker at seminars
and marine conferences worldwide, serves on the Hawaii Shark Task Force, and has
appeared on many television programs, including the Discovery Channel’s Shark
Week.
Jennifer Crites is a journalist/photographer whose work has appeared in
countless books and magazines, including Islands, National Geographic Kids, and
Travel + Leisure.
This free one-hour program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii.

BAMBOO RIDGE TALES
Storytellers Eric Mita and Janice Terukina will share stories and poetry of
island lifestyles by island authors adapted from Bamboo Ridge; The Journal of
Hawaii Literature and Arts. Picture brides, fishing, "hapa'dating" and
local-style eating are celebrated in this lively tandem storytelling adventure.
Eric Mita is a veteran stage and screen actor. He has made appearances on The
Discovery Channel, local television shows, and on various Kumu Kahua Theatre
productions. Janice Terukina, a veteran actor with the East West Players in Los
Angeles, joins Eric. Since returning to Hawaii, Janice has appeared in numerous
film and television roles as well as on stage, most recently with Honolulu
Theatre for Youth and Kumu Kahua Theatre.

this presentation will be Attorney Scott Suzuki, J.D., M.P.H., a lawyer in
private practice, and a volunteer with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Elder
Law Program, where he assists senior and disabled clients with a wide range of
legal concerns including estate planning, guardianships, public benefits and
elder abuse. Suzuki will discuss topics such as advanced healthcare directives,
power of attorney, trusts, living wills, Medicare and Medicaid. Following the
presentation will be a question-and-answer session. Participants should come

OBAKE AND OTHER GHOSTLY TALES OF JAPAN AND HAWAII

get you ready for Halloween, Wailuku Public Library is scheduled to host
"Obake and other Ghostly Tales of Japan and Hawaii," featuring Dann
Seki. Admission is free. Storyteller Dann Seki, who is also a stage and
screen actor, has appeared in numerous local commercials, most of the
television shows filmed in Hawaii, and on stage at many of the local
theatres. Presented by the UH-Manoa Outreach College's Statewide
Cultural Extension Program, this performance is jointly sponsored by the
National Endowment for the Arts, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture
and the
Arts, and the Maui Friends of the Library. This one-hour program is

This fall the Hawaii State Public Library System will present
outstanding national and local storytellers in a series of programs
sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and the UH-Manoa
Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program. They are Baba
Jamal Koram from Virginia, Cathy Spagnoli from Washington state, Hawaii
storytellers Nyla Fujii-Babb and Janice Terukina, and
choreographer/dancer Yukie Shiroma.

JAMAL KORAM - "THE STORYMAN"
Author and educator Baba Jamal Koram brings the history, language,
people, and folklore of world cultures to life through storytelling and
music in “The StoryMan.” Recommended for all ages, this program will be

CATHY SPAGNOLI
Cathy Spagnoli is a modern storyteller who seeks to build storytelling
bridges between her American and Asian cultures, and to remind listeners
that the timeless art of the storyteller is still vital in today’s
fast-paced world. She will share a variety of traditional and modern
Japanese folk tales for families with children age 5 and older at
libraries on OAHU,
MAUI,
MOLOKAI, and
KAUAI.
"McDERMOTT
IN MOTION"
Nyla Fujii-Babb, one of Hawaii’s premier storytellers, and
choreographer/dancer Yukie Shiroma will be featured in “McDermott in
Motion,” a special performance dedicated to Caldecott Award-winning
children’s picture book artist Gerald McDermott. Fujii-Babb and Shiroma
will create a performance of “living picture books” combining modern
dance, music, masks, costumes, and storytelling. Recommended for ages 5
and older.
