Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winning group, Nā Kama…showcasing a unique blend of traditional Hawaiian music with a contemporary touch, has been
in the entertainment business for 10 years. Still moving forward, dedicated to the
perpetuation of Hawaiian music of the past, composing new Hawaiian music for today, and
continuing to evolve into the future as still one of Hawai‘i’s most promising and
enduring entertainers of Hawaiian music. Nā Kama first began in 1998 as a duo,
Brian Mersberg and Eric Lee, releasing their debut recording, “Ke Ala Hou.” This
recording earned a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Nomination in 1999 for “Hawaiian
Language Performance.” Through this first endeavor, Brian and Eric learned much
of the business aspect of the music industry and were given many opportunities
to travel throughout the state of Hawai‘i and beyond, sharing their love for
Hawaiian music. In 2003, Brian and Eric released their sequel recording, “Come
and See…Hawai‘i.” Best known for their smash hit rendition of “Nani Wai‘ale‘ale,”
listeners of Hawaiian music immediately bared witness to the impressive growth
and maturity in Nā Kama’s sound and incredible energy. Through time of
performing and growing, Nā Kama felt that it was time to rise yet again to the
next level and push the bar of their music to include a third member. In 2005,
Nā Kama became complete in sound and stage performance. With the coming of third
member, Danny Naipo, Nā Kama released their third recording, “Kamakolu,” in
2006, which won the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for “Hawaiian Language
Performance.” This achievement in Nā Kama’s career gave certain assurance that
they were able to produce a sound worthy of acknowledgement in the Hawaiian
music industry. However, instead of being content with their success, this only
pushed Nā Kama to continue moving forward, evolving, creating and performing
Hawaiian music the way they have been for the past 10 years. In 2008, Nā Kama
moved forward on a double-release project. Their 4
th
CD whichi kicks off the celebration of
their 10th
anniversary, is their first Christmas recording
and showcases Nā Kama’s versatility in musical creativity. With a blend of
Hawaiian and English lyrics, original and traditional selections for the Holiday
Season, Nā Kama presents “E Ola Ke Ali‘i” (The Nā Kama Christmas Collection –
Volume I). Their next release (projected for release in Spring 2009), will be
their next Hawaiian release, showcasing a taste of classic and new music of Hawai‘i for all
