Young Adult Reference Desk: 808-586-3490

Information and recreational materials for teenagers are available in this collection. Classics, college and career information in book and pamphlet formats, nonfiction, an extensive science fiction and fantasy section, graphic novels, and spinner racks filled with a variety of genres await teens who come to visit. Librarians from this section regularly visit schools to present book talks to students.

The materials are aimed at the teenage audience, roughly from grades 7 to 12. All subject areas are covered as they relate to the age level. The fiction collection is geared toward young adults with an emphasis on science fiction, suspense, classic works, teen romance, and coming-of-age novels.

The section subscribes to 10 magazines including titles devoted to video games, surfing, young women's interests, and entertainment. These titles are housed in the Young Adult section and do not circulate.

The section keeps a College and Careers section stocked with occupational guides, test preparation books, and college and scholarship handbooks.

The staff of the Young Adult Section visit intermediate and high schools to talk about books and library services and they also conduct tours for intermediate and high school classes visiting or doing research at the Hawaii State Library.
