New Library Rule Changes in Effect
Public Libraries in Hawaii have begun implementing changes to the Hawaii State
Public Library System’s
Administrative Rules. The Board of Education
(BOE) voted unanimously to approve these rule changes during their April 15,
2010 General Business Meeting. Among the major rule changes that
affect library customers are changes in overdue fines, DVD fines and library
card replacement costs. Click here for more
details.

DONATE TO YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY!
We
invite community and civic groups to adopt their favorite public library this
holiday season and consider hosting a benefit fundraising event. Local
businesses, service organizations, senior organizations, school clubs,
preschools, Boy and Girl Scouts, or other groups might want to consider hosting
a bake sale, car wash, pancake breakfast, penny-drive, craft sale, or company
holiday event and donating the proceeds to their community library. Also, when
celebrating a birthday, special milestone, or the passing of a loved one, please
consider making a donation in their honor to your library. Your tax-deductible
donation will benefit the community by keeping your libraries open, and by
contributing towards the costs of library materials, core services, programs,
utilities, and other operational expenses.
FOR CHECK DONATIONS
Please make a check payable to Hawaii State Public Library System, designate
your library on the check, and mail to:
Office of the State Librarian, Administrative Services Branch, 44 Merchant St.,
Honolulu, HI 96813

Three Oahu teens are the “Top 3” Grand Prize winners of the 2010
Hawaii State Public Library System and Hawaii Pizza Hut Teen Summer
Reading Finale conducted on July 31, 2010 at Kahala Mall Center
Court Stage: Xavier Imperial, Mililani Public Library finalist (Maryknoll,
grade 9), won an Apple iPad; Brittany Amano, Hawaii State
Library-Young Adult Section finalist (Washington Middle School,
grade 8), won an Apple iPod Touch; and Ian Lindsey, Waimanalo Public
& School Library finalist (Kamehameha, grade 11), won a 19” flat
screen LCD TV.
They were among a large group of finalists, each a lucky drawing
winner at one of the 23 Oahu branch public libraries. One-by-one, finalists
selected a numbered pizza box with a prize listed inside. Other
prizes included video cameras and gift cards. Hawaii Pizza Hut,
corporate sponsor of the Teen Summer Reading Program for the past 18
years, donated the prizes.
More than 3,000 teens statewide participated in the annual HSPLS
Teen Summer Reading Program which encourages reading and strengthens
reading habits. Collectively, they have read nearly 24,000 books.
“Team Read @ your library!” was this year’s dual theme which
highlighted books about sports, athletes, fitness, and the
suspense-romance themes featuring the popular “Twilight Saga”
vampire novels by Stephenie Meyer and the debut of the movie
adaptation of Meyer’s “Eclipse” (third book in the Twilight saga)
that opened in theaters last month. Students entering grade 7
through 2010 high school graduates were invited to sign up for the
five-week Teen Summer Reading Program. The Friends of the Library of
Hawaii are the overall sponsors of the HSPLS Summer Reading
Programs.
